Players Seek Repeat Titles Tim Hernandez and Sue Yang won the Mixed in October's Fall Fest, and now in the Municipal Championships they are after a second Tennis Center title. Yang is also favored in the women's singles, where she'll have to contend with Fest division winner Nancy Elias, and also Elizabeth Gentile, who fought a close battle with Elias in October. Mike Purtell was another winner; although in a hard fought match he narrowly escaped the clutches of Wayne Kinslow in the Fest 3.0 semis. Now Purtell is after a second title. Also trying for a repeat are Leo Gonzales and LeRoy Luokkannen in the 3.5 doubles. Luokkannen, who had a close fight with Fest winner Stuart Gong, is after the singles too, but Herman Wage is hoping to gun him down. |
Chilean Blood To Boil In Men's 5.0 Lured by the competition, stalwart veteran, Sonny Leyva, is making a return to Roeding Park. Decades ago, Leyva and Chilean groundstroker Pedro Ilic were regulars at the Tennis Center. Now Ilic's son, Martin, wields the racket; Martin Ilic is one of the favorites in the men's championship event. He will be especially difficult in the doubles, as he is partnered with City College standout, Ignacio Lucero (also from Chile!) If Ilic manages to slip by no.1 seed John Brekhus, he and Lucero will meet for a sizzling Chilean final. Long absent park regular, Bob Croeni, is making an appearance in the Municipal Championships. Croeni, a notorious singles-only player, is also entered in the 4.0 doubles, where he is paired with no.1 seed Mike Tannen. |
