Displaying an ideal zero backswing, Scott Borowiak
is in perfect balance as he lunges for a low forehand volley. |
|
Using his left hand well to limit his backswing,
Borowiak stretches wide for a backhand volley. |

Scott turns and steps. |

He stays down well after contact, then lifts
into a firm-wristed follow-through. |

A CLASSIC
COMPACT FOREHAND |
|
As Scott rolls over this forehand, he
appears to be whipping the ball aggressively like most
of his juniors do, but there is a piece of his stroke missing
in the above frame. |
|
Here the missing part of Scott's forehand
is revealed. Now we see his arm guide the ball forward
and up before it wraps downward to the position in the frame
at left. |
ADVANCED COMMENTARY
|
Scott Borowiak's
forehand is an excellent all-purpose stroke, especially for a
senior player who doesn't want to expend all his life's energy
on every whack at the ball. Younger players, however, like
Scott's juniors (see previous page) should strike at the ball
more aggressively in order to compete. Their western grips
allow for more of a buggy whip, which lets the shoulder
actually throw at the ball (and not just shove or pull at
the racket.) Instead of just arcing over the ball, their
racket-heads pop down and up instantly into the hit.
