With a 3rd place Blue finish in May, Jack Lovgren held on to his lead in the 05 Grind Prix.  Jas Chauhan, who took 3rd in Gold remains 8 points behind as the final tournament of the summer approaches.

Leroy Luokkannen slipped past Sue Yang in a playoff singles set to capture the May Gold, while junior Ashley Ockey finished in front of Ken Johnson to claim the Blue title.

The Fraz Knocked Out

In a post-tournament exhibition, The Fraz (Bob Fraser) was knocked down by a Luokkannen forehand.  Semi-unconscious, The Fraz was revived by Bryne Downing, who administered a therapeutic massage to the neck as Chan Po and Jerry Corwin looked on in disbelief.

Karen Shepard Shows Up

Included in the Gold draw was legendary veteran, Karen Shepard, who made her first appearance in years.  Shepard, a longtime member of RPTC, promised to be back as soon as the courts are resurfaced.

April Summary

Chan Po won Gold in April, proving that his March victory in that same top division was no fluke.  Po edged his longtime partner, Jas Chauhan, by two points for the title.  According to Chauhan, the fact that Po was not seeded gave him an advantage because the seeds play each other in the final round and that keeps their respective scores down.  "Now he should be seeded," says Chauhan,  "based on past results."  Jerry Corwin and Tim Hernandez tied for third in the division.

Chito Marquez Takes Blue
               Wife Ties Buettner

The big forehand of Chito Marquez led him to a solid Blue victory.  To earn the title, Marquez had to play both with and against his wife, Lucy.  "I did better playing with her than against her," says Chito, "I didn't know she was so tough."  Lucy Marquez ended up tied for second with Doug Buettner, an acrobatic newcomer.

Hernandez Wins Make-up Event
         Chauhan, Luokkannen 2nd

A second tournament was held in April because of reschedule confusion compounded by sunny skies on a day twelve thunderstorms were supposed to collide directly over Roeding Park.  Instead, it was Tim Hernandez who collided with hapless opponents as he stroked his was to Gold victory.  Jas Chauhan and LeRoy Luokkannen tied for 2nd.  In the Blue group, Jorge Portela and his arch rival, Bob Seligman, combined with veteran Jack Lovgren to force a three-way tie for first.  Lovgren's efforts gave him top honors in what is becoming a close Grind Prix race.

Players Note

If you played both April tournaments, whichever score was higher was entered into your Grind Prix standings.

LETTERS FROM MEMBERS

I enjoyed the May tournament, and not just because I was lucky enough to place 2nd in the Blue division.  When I came home with that classy medal, my kids, who don't know much about tennis, really thought their Dad was something special.  It was a great Father's Day present.  Thanks!           Ken Johnson

This Tennis Fresno website is terrific!  I can't wait to see what it does for Roeding Park Tennis club in  the future        Kassy Smith-Chauhan

Please thank the Board for their kind remembrance of my efforts on RPTC's behalf.  I will treasure the plaque always.        Mike Ball
(Ed note:  A former President, Mike Ball received an 05 Service Award from the club.)

I wish to show my appreciation for the good work the Board and the teaching staff are doing in supporting our sport.  Only those involved can understand the importance a sport plays in formulating a healthy lifestyle.  You can be very proud of the work you are doing.     Jack Lovgren
