Po, Amomonpon,
Canales Win
Lutes, Egan, Downing 2nd
Chan Po fought off a hard pressing Ben Lutes to
capture the 05 opener, his first ever Grind Prix title. Po, who
rarely ventures into the elite Gold group,
finished two points ahead of Lutes, a small lefty, who pound for
pound, puts more on the ball than any other player at the Park. Much improved junior, Max Sosa,
took 3rd, just one point ahead of Roeding
Park's No. 1 woman, Sue Yang.
Little Pete Amomonpon edged
out tall, hard-hitting Candace Egan in a
brutal coin flip to claim Blue honors.
Not far to their rears, Shirley Stockton and Jack
Lovgren tied for 3rd after the final round.
The Red title went to Irene
Canales, who snuck past Bryne Downing in a
hamburger-eating tiebreaker. Jake Montano, in his
first appearance in the grind, finished 3rd, one point ahead of
crafty veteran Curley
Harris.

The Park's Best Lefties
Poised and
balanced, all-court lefthander, Jas Chauhan (above) is ready to
rumble. In a post-tournament exhibition, Chauhan
and Thatcher
Weldon defeated lefty Craig Hannen
and lefty Ben Lutes in what
can only be described as a long-ass Super Tiebreaker. Weldon, the only righthander in
the group said he tried not to think about the fact that
he was playing against two lefties.
"Hell," he said, "there was one on my side
of the court, too."
