"It's just a guess, but I think Chan has just hit a lob." Dee DeWitt "The fellow looks like he's
about to catch the ball in his left hand, so I think maybe he's trying
to serve but doesn't like the toss so he's going to start over since
he's footfaulting anyway. We have players like that here too,and
they always have a sneaky look in their eyes." "Having played against Po, I believe he is preparing to call the ball out in mid flight, which is one of his favorite ploys." Ken Bennett |

Is Chan Po defending himself against a topspin moonball that is barreling down at him? Or, has he just hit a lob? |
"Twinkle Toes" Corwin picks off a floater mid-stride
|
Jerry Corwin plays better percentage tennis than just about anybody on the planet. He plays 99% within his game, meaning that he doesn't try anything he hasn't mastered. And topspin is one of those things. So Jerry doesn't mess with topsin, not even in his dreams. He just slices the ball. On every backhand and every forehand. And so his shots pretty much go in a straight line without the arc of net clearance a topspin hitter gains. However, Jerry knows his limitations. When the ball is low and he is forced to hit up over the net, he keeps his straight shots in by easing up on them. But when this guy gets a ball that is higher than the net, and he can hit down on it, even just a little, watch out! He whacks at it as if he were going to chop down a giant redwood with just one blow. Corwin is also deceptively quick and nimble on his feet. Do not bet against him. Pictured in the background of the photo at left is another player you would not want to wager against, the infamous two-headed LeRoy Luokkannen. |
